Weary after a busy Carnival Monday, we finally popped into KAVA for dinner to see what the pizza buzz is all about.
KAVA’s pizza menu offers 18 thin crust pizzas fired by a combination gas and wood burning oven. Exciting pizza toppings abound here from the signature KAVA (goat cheese, caramelized onions, toasted walnuts or capers) to the Pizza de Scampi with spicy cajun shrimp & pineapple.
We sampled the Prosciutto, the Strong Man (spinach, feta and mozzarella cheese) and a vegetarian pizza minus the cheese. The pies were tasty although several slices were a little charred. Wood-fired char aside, our Strong Man pizza was redeemed by the healthy topping of fresh spinach, which is always a plus. Another tick in KAVA’s favour is that whole-wheat pizzas are occasionally available although we forgot to inquire about them on this visit.
The service at KAVA was friendly and efficient despite the restaurant being packed with Carnival revelers (weirdly) in full costume/bikini along with KES the Band and entourage. We particularly appreciated that our friend’s vegan requests were accommodated without a hint of the “we can’t do that attitude” so common in many of Trinidad’s restaurants.
KAVA also features a full menu of salads, starters, burgers, steaks, pastas, etc. and free wi-fi!

Underwhelmed by the food. Our server was very personable but failed to deliver when he was told that the burger was 40 minutes late and completely overcooked. He came back with the lame excuse that the burger was left waiting to be picked up; not brought to the table on time hence why it was not medium as ordered. Therefore the bread was super soggy, (gross) and the patty quite salty. This was the second time eating here. It is a great location, but needs to step up the quality of food.

Disappointed and disgusted after my visit to kava last week.
1. Staff training- They have a great cocktail menu but my waitress didn’t know it well and had to go to bar 3 times on my query of 1 drink!
2. Consistency is an issue. Ordered some apps to share among 5 persons (lamb satay, cassava fries, samosas and wontons); these were fine. 2nd round we ordered more wontons and calamari and these were soaking in oil and calamari really chewy. I know that oily food is when you don’t have the oil to temp when frying and calamari does have a slight chew (slight!) but this chewiness could only be from overcooking or freezer burnt/ old stock!
3…which brings me to the 3rd issue, customer service…I call my waitress and nicely tell her that its not right…she tells me she’ll take it for the chef to “check”. I didn’t understand until she came back with the same basket to tell me that the chef tried it and said nothing was wrong with it. Seriously! He tried the same dish and sent back to a customer and secondly argue with a customer on the quality of something that was poorly prepared…wow! You just don’t do that in a customer service environment.
