Foodie Events in Trinidad & Tobago: FEBRUARY 2013

UpMarket Trinidad February 2013February’s food and wine events in T&T include cooking classes, tons of Valentine’s Day special events at restaurants, a food-focused Carnival fete, two markets for food lovers, a chocolate tasting from Gina’s Chocolate Truffles, and an expert-led wine tasting session!

Saturday, February 23, 9am-11:30am, CAKE DECORATING CLASS at Callender’s Cake Decorating (San Fernando, Trinidad).  Classes are on Saturdays, starting Feb. 23rd.  Call (868) 687-9062 or (868) 771-6248.  $

Tuesdays, February 26th, March 5th and March 12th, 6pm-8:30pm, SUSHI & JAPANESE COOKING SESSIONS at Fanatic Kitchen Studio (Port of Spain, Trinidad).  Sushi; Onigiri, Karage and Miso Soup; and Tempura, Panko Chicken and Japanese Rice will be covered in each cooking session respectively. Cost is $1,400 for all three sessions or $500 per session.  Contact Sita 681-1423 or Laura 766-2865 to register.  $

Ministry of Food Production (Agriculture Now) Farmers Training Centre’s FREE TRAINING COURSES: February 2013 courses include Home Gardening; Pineapple Production; Winemaking; Pepper Sauce Making; Pumpkin & Squash Production; Cocoa Production and more. Link to February class schedule, classes are offered in Centeno, Caroni, Penal, Point Fortin, Rio Claro, Sangre Grande, and Princes Town.  FREE!

Saturday, February 2, 9am-12pm, DELICIOUS CHINESE COOKING: Lessons with Wendy Rahamut at Rahamut’s School of Cooking (San Fernando, Trinidad).  Cooking classes are demonstration classes, conducted by Wendy Rahamut.  Students can sample the food prepared and recipe handouts are provided.  Cost is $400; call (868) 653-1478 or 357-0927 to book; rahamut@gmail.com.  $

Saturdays, February 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd, SAN ANTONIO GREEN MARKET Sale in Santa Cruz (Trinidad).  The market is located on Saddle Road, near Cutucupano Road in Upper Santa Cruz and sells fresh “produce (including unusual indigenous fruits, vegetables, herbs and seasonings), specialty foods (pastelle, payme, cocoa powder, goat’s milk) and artisanal items (wooden bowls and platters, handmade soaps etc).”  San Antonio Green Market Website and Facebook Page.   FREE ADMISSION. 

Sunday, February 3, DIM SUM at Kam Wah Restaurant (Port of Spain, Trinidad).  Monthly dim sum by carts at Kam Wah featuring “trolleys brimming with suckling pig, Peking duck, mimosas and more!”  $

Monday, February 4th & Tuesday, February 5th, 6pm-8:30pm, ITALIAN COOKING WITH IAN ROOKS at Fanatic Kitchen Studio (Port of Spain, Trinidad). Two hands-on sessions covering pasta & two sauces and second courses respectively. Cost is $800/person for both sessions or $450 per person for a single session. Friday, February 8, 12pm-6pm, TTHTI’s TASTE OF CARNIVAL at Trinidad & Tobago Hospitality and Tourism Institute (Chaguaramas, Trinidad).  This year’s theme is “Sweet Han’ Secrets, The Experience.”  As always, this event will serve up some of Trinidad & Tobago’s tastiest local foods – Creole and Indian dishes, souse, corn soup, doubles, snow cone, and more.  Cost is $400-$450.  Link to more information.  $

Saturday, February 9, 10:30am-3pm, ‘COCOBEL TRINI PASSION SALE’ at Medulla Art Gallery (Woodbrook, Trinidad).  Cocobel, “totally local single estate true trini chocolate, full of all our lusty tropical vibes” is on sale!  FREE ADMISSION. 

Saturday, February 9, 11am-2pm, CHOCOLATE TASTING at The Happy Gourmet (Valsayn, Trinidad).  Join Gina of Gina’s Chocolate Truffles for a taste of her of truffles, caramels and chocolate.  FREE ADMISSION. 

Saturday, February 9, 6am-2pm, TASTING PARTY at SAN ANTONIO GREEN MARKET – Crab & dumpling, Paramin seasoned geera pork, BBQ chicken w/a passion fruit glaze, barbadine punch, and hot & cold cocoa tea will be on sale and of course local fruits, vegetables, sauces, preserves and fresh juices will be available.  (The San Antonio Green Market is open every Saturday from 6am to 2pm.)   FREE ADMISSION. 

Saturday, February 9, 9:30am-3pm, UPMARKET!!! (Woodbrook, Trinidad) – It’s the first UpMarket for 2013!  As always delicious food treats, condiments, meats and cheeses and fresh produce will be on sale, along with art, crafts, jewelry, candles, soaps and much more.  FREE ADMISSION. 

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14th – T&T Restaurant Specials for 2013 Valentine’s Day (link) 

Thursday, February 14, from 11am, ‘COCOBEL TRINI PASSION SALE’ at Medulla Art Gallery (Woodbrook, Trinidad).  Cocobel, “totally local single estate true trini chocolate, full of all our lusty tropical vibes” is on sale!  FREE ADMISSION. 

Sunday, February 17, 3pm-5pm, SUNDAY AFTERNOON TEA at Ortinola Great House (Maracas Valley, Trinidad).  Sunday tea service and treats both savoury and sweet.  Cost is $130/person (children 5-12 years are $70) and includes a choice of three savoury and two sweet items, as well as a choice of beverages (teas, coffee & juice).  Reservations are required – email info@ortinola.com or call (868) 696-1507.  $

Wednesday, February 20th to Friday, February 22nd, CAKE ARTISTRY WORKSHOP at Tobago Hospitality & Tourism Institute (Mt.
